Characteristics of the School of Humanities

1. Foremost Scale and Diverse Staffs

The School of Humanities at the University of Toyama includes 9 programs of study which offer a total of 23 concentrations. We are proud that we have 54 teachers (as of October, 2021) and this ranks highly among national university corporations. Click here for a list of courses and teachers.

2. Foreign Language Education

The School of Humanities has a large staff of language professors, including 3 native speakers. They will help students to improve their practical foreign language ability and familiarize them with different cultures. We make use of language laboratories to master communication of foreign languages.

3. Information Education

We, who live in the 21st century, need to acquire computer literacy, the ability to have a good command of information equipment such as computers. In the foundation course, you can study “Information Processing”, and in addition, the School of Humanities promotes that the students should be computer-literate. In the computer laboratory, students can use Windows and Macintosh computers anytime.

4. International Exchange

The University of Toyama willingly accepts international students. International students take the same lessons as Japanese students. Communicating with international students as friends or as tutors will not only help Japanese students to understand different cultures, but will also be a valuable experience for them. In addition, the University of Toyama encourages students to study abroad. The School of Humanities has an agreement with the Novosibirsk University in Russia and Kyungpook National University in Korea. Students from our School go to study in various countries such as South Korea, China, England, the United States, Germany, France and Russia. Furthermore, the School of Humanities has courses that focus on the language, culture, and history of areas such as China, Russia, and South Korea in order to facilitate the cultural exchanges that have recently begun. We are trying to play a leadership role in providing study and education opportunities in the region surrounding the Sea of Japan.

5. Various Different Courses and Themes of Study

Freshmen are supposed to take cultural studies and choose courses that they are interested in for one year. From sophomore, students belong to a course and take specialty education. (Some courses conduct the screening examination.) Specialty education has a wide variety of lectures conducted in large lecture halls equipped with the latest AV equipments, to small seminars. Seminars are the best opportunity for students to engage in lively discussion and deepen their understanding of the course material. Various classes are available such as introductory classes for acquiring the basic knowledge, reading classes to improve language skills, and seminars to study theories and cultivate critical thinking skills. ※Class schedules depend on the chosen course of study. In addition to the classes described above, some courses also provide field work opportunity that allow students to study outside the university.
