学部で人文地理学分野に所属したい方へ
私が所属する人文学部の行動・社会文化領域は、人文地理学のほかに社会学、文化人類学、国際関係論、心理学が軒を連ねています。富山大学に進学してきた一年生は、最初の一年間で、まず３つある領域の中から行動・社会文化領域を選ぶかどうかを緩やかに判断するところから、大学生活が始まるはずです。
他の２領域と、行動・社会文化領域の違いをざっくりと言えば、残る２領域は歴史や哲学、文学、語学など、どちらかといえばインドア系であるか、現代よりも過去のものごとに関心を向ける専門分野が中心の領域です。しかし、行動・社会文化領域の学問体系はいずれも、社会調査・地域調査を通じて、学生が自分でデータを収集する「フィールドワーク」が、学修にあたって要求されるという共通項があります。人文地理学もまさに、フィールドワークを通じて調査地の人々から問題解決や考察のヒントを教わり、考察を深めていく方法がとられやすい学問といえるでしょう。
学部生の皆さんは、一年間の間にまず、自分がそういう野外調査を通してものごとを考える学問に興味や適性があるかどうかを判断してください。富山大では、最初の半年の間に「行動・社会文化入門」が開講されると思います。この授業を通して、自分がこの領域に向いているかどうか、この領域の中で人文地理学に興味を持てそうかどうかを、ゆっくり考えてみましょう。人文地理学に興味が持てそうだなと思った方は、後期に私の開講する「人文地理学概論」を受講してくれれば、おおむね人文地理学がどういうものの考え方をする学問かは分かってくると思います。一年生のおわりに最終的なゼミの選択をする機会が来ますので、そのときまでに人文地理学にするかどうかを判断できるようになっていれば大丈夫です。
私の所属する人文地理学教室に進もうと考えている方のほとんどは、富山大学の学部生でしょう。しかし、中には海外からの留学や、他学部・他校から転・編入学を考えている人もいるかも知れません。他学部から人文学部への転学部は、転学部手続きを進める必要があります。他の高等教育機関からの学部編入は基本的に三年次への編入学試験の受験が必要です。留学生の方は、現在のご所属が本学の協定校であるかどうか、国費留学か私費留学か、日本語能力検定試験の成績はどのくらいかによって条件が異なります。いずれも、まずは当方の人社系学務課（TEL 076-445-6138）に照会してください。
For Those Interested in Joining the Human Geography Division (or Suzuki’s Seminar)
The Faculty of Humanities at my university includes a range of fields within the Behavioral and Social Cultural Studies domain, including Sociology, Cultural Anthropology, International Relations, and Psychology, alongside Human Geography. Freshmen entering the University of Toyama will begin their academic life by gradually deciding whether to choose the Behavioral and Social Cultural Studies domain out of the three available domains during their first year.
To roughly distinguish this domain from the other two, the other domains primarily focus on subjects like History, Philosophy, Literature, and Linguistics, which are more indoor-oriented or focus on the past rather than contemporary issues. However, the academic framework in the Behavioral and Social Cultural Studies domain, including Human Geography, shares a common requirement: the need for fieldwork, where students conduct social and regional surveys to collect their own data. In Human Geography, in particular, fieldwork is a key method, through which students engage with local people to gain insights that can help solve problems or deepen their analysis.
As a freshman, during your first year, you should evaluate whether you have an interest in or aptitude for learning through outdoor surveys and fieldwork. At the University of Toyama, an introductory course in Behavioral and Social Cultural Studies will likely be offered during the first semester. Through this course, you can take the time to reflect on whether this domain suits you and if you find Human Geography interesting. If you think you would be interested in Human Geography, taking the “Introduction to Human Geography” course offered in the second semester will give you a solid understanding of the discipline and its approach. By the end of the first year, you'll have the opportunity to make a final decision on your seminar choice, so you should be able to determine whether Human Geography is right for you by then.
Most of the students considering joining my Human Geography seminar are likely undergraduates from the University of Toyama. However, there may also be students considering studying abroad or transferring from other faculties or universities. If you are considering transferring from another faculty to the Faculty of Humanities, you will need to go through the transfer process. If you are applying for a transfer from another higher education institution, you will generally need to take the entrance examination for the third year. For international students, the conditions vary depending on whether your current institution is a partner university of ours, whether you are a government-funded or privately funded student, and your proficiency in the Japanese language as measured by the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test.
